Chambers thesaurus has it as a synonym for routine.

Like you said, I canā€™t parse 8d exactly. Only thing I can guess is all rows and columns with the answers are divided in two, with the exception of the column with 8d?

In 16d, it is the first word that sounds like ā€˜pick outā€™ or notice. The second word is the instrument.

Thanks Mathi, I saw that after I posted - I'd incorrectly assumed that the homophone instruction applied to the whole clue - I'm not with it this morning:-(

[Spoiler alert] For the parsing of 8d...proceed, for instance, in a Southerly direction along 5d continuing to 18d, and a hint should be revealed.

I found this very difficult and was stuck on 26a for ages as I had a very plausible wrong answer for 16d - I had a homophone of "seek 'arp"!

Yes, it was a difficult puzzle. I got stuck near the northeast corner for quite a while.

I assume that 21A ends in C if my unparsed 8D is right. Is it a geometrical puzzle?
