Thanks malone.

So, in other words: the omissions - unlike what is described by the rest (the entries) - are deliberate/intended?

Yes, I can see that as the explanation. Not mad about it though. But not complaining. I often find myself looking for a final twist when there isn't one. And, just as often, not realising there's a final twist when there is.

Puzzling.

The inquisitor frequently outshines the Listener, but not for myself this week I'm afraid. It was OK with some tricky bits, but I was left with similar feelings after having watched Bayern Munich behind closed doors last evening - a bit flat.

Bobbycollins, I agree. It was an OK puzzle, but just OK. I felt it wasn't very substantial, I didn't have any 'oh, that's clever' moments. Still, as usual, I remind myself that other solvers might have enjoyed every minute!

Thanks for that, Malone. I hate to be churlish because I fully appreciate that the efforts of the setters are wholly disproportionate to their rewards. I guess that this was an homage from Panther to the poet.

Bobbycollins, I'm sure the setters are realistic to know that you can't please all of the people all of the time. I've seen puzzles that I've loved being seen as disappointments from other solvers - and that's happened in reverse too.

This has kept me entertained for most of the week, but as is often the case, I am stumped on one final answer. I am missing one letter in 33d. Clue is "Institute abandoning city at the end of August (4). I have ST?T and the extra letter is 'R'. I know from previous posts that the definition is 'august' but frustratingly I am not seeing it. Any help please to get me over the line?

'Institute' is the definition for the clue. 'August' is the definition for a seven-letter word, where you drop a three-letter city, in the UK, often used in crosswords. That leaves you with the entry.

bigf, the definition is “august” as an adjective, which is why using a capital A is rather sneaky, as I mentioned in my earlier post. Arguably unfair
