Completed but, as ever, one clue remains a mystery. 33d. I'm 90% sure of the answer (institute minus one letter...which I know) but where does the abandoned city fit in?

Add the usual three-letter city to the end of the grid entry and you have a synonym for “August”, granama1. A bit naughty to capitalise the A, and not very Ximenean in my book, but doubtless others will disagree

No problem ginge! I’m forever doing that, even when I refresh the page before posting. By the time I’ve identified buses or traffic lights I’m usually too late

Thanks Ginge and Quisling, understood and can put this one aside. Yes, capitalising the A was a bit mean. Overall I enjoyed this but one or two clues were a bit overworked I think eg 22d...just a bit too complicated to give a fancy surface.
It all lead to an interesting browse about someone I didn't know anything about though.

I am slowly going mad! I've got all the extra letters and all the unclued words, but I still have 3 clues I just can't make any sense of - and I've been trying for the last 3 hours!!

3d Upset and uneasy about being naked - SAE? with D extra

12a Nausea caused by fish turning stomach - ?IGUT with S extra

17a Sheet metal roller - ?LATE with N extra

Hi Brendan,
3d. & 12a both have 2 letters removed.
3d. Def. is upset. Entry is an anagram of one word in the clue minus the outside letters (naked). Removed letters are central.
12a Def is 'nausea'. Entry is a 2-letter word for a fish, reversed + a word for 'stomach'.
17a. Def is 'roller'. See Malone's hint at post 30.

Hi Mattrom,

the problem is I've put every single combination of letters into Chambers with zero results. To start with, for 12a I don't know of a single fish with 2 letters and for 17a I've seen all the hints, that it's an anagram of "metal" + the extra letter 'N', but again, I've put in every anagram solver but with no results.
