In 7d I can see the moved letter and that the answer's hidden in the clue, but I've got ALED which is a word I can't find anywhere, let alone mean "under control" - any ideas?

Take the 'e' out leaving 'hard' replacing 'c(an)e's 'contents' = 'che' = def I for Shakespeare ('Bill').

7d is in the clue, brendan - remove 'e' from 'not(E)' [giving - 'not all'] and add to 'maDE Lads' (recoiling = reversed)

I must be being really dense but I still don't see it - how does ALED mean "under control" (I can't even find the word in any dictionary)

Thanks, and I I get that, but the answer isn't the last three letters, it's 4 letters - where is the instruction to remove the first letter?

When you complete the (non-word) top row there isn't an 'a' in front of LED, brendan - the last letter of the'weapon' goes there.

Ok thanks. I'm obviously not explaining myself very well but this puzzle has passed the point of being fun and become a chore, so I'll leave it.
