I would imagine that Granada is delightful in October - I can't vouch for the condition of the gardens but I doubt they'd be too shabby.

I remember the thrill of standing on the exact spot where Columbus, having been rebuffed by his own king, pitched the king of Spain to underwrite his adventures. And nearby, Suspire del Moro, where the last of the Moors was in the same year expurged from Iberia, looking over their shoulder and sighing with regret at the beauty they had created in their nigh-800 years of awkward residency, and were leaving. So much momentous world history flows from that place and time.

I find the inability to travel is really cramping my style and I guess it may be the same for you. I know you're not a toper but wine is a comfort to me, most good wine having co-ordinates in place and time. If you can't travel you can at least have the holiday come to you in a bottle!

All the best, and I hope you make it to Spain before too long.

Tyke - every day's a school day - I had no idea that the pilgrim fathers had links in the Doncaster area. I'll certainly look out for those events - M

Tyke maybe there’s a little old village in New England where they all look like you?!

I`d like to think so - my grandma was born in Gringley on the Hill ( between Bawtry and Gainsborough ) which probably formed part of the Puritan `gene pool`. Grandad visited nearly every racecourse in the country, during his lifetime, so I don`t think we were ever a religious family.

Many events here too. We live about an hour's drive from Plymouth, in Norfolk County.

tyke: Post a selfie and I'll keep an eye out for look-alikes.

I`ve broken too many cameras! Imagine `Ray Donovan` - but not quite as violent. During lockdown I`m passing the time watching the Ray Donovan series on tv - I love all the accents especially the Boston ones!

I've just dropped in on this thread. Are you a tyke, then, tyke? I know Scrooby - we have friends there - and it's over the border.

Isn't there a house in Bawtry with the address "No.1 Yorkshire"?

Local accents are disappearing. When I was in grammar school I could always tell what end of town other kids lived in by hearing just a few words, and I lived in a small town. Some Bostonians hire trainers to rid them of the stereotypical accent so that they can sound as bland as other Americans. I stopped dropping terminal r's when I went away to college, but in other parts of the US I'm still sometimes asked if I'm a Brit. I love the accent of the folks on our island in Maine, but that's phasing out too of course. I say screw phonics.

Back in the 80s (as I remember) a friend was at a motorcycle rally in Shaftesbury, Dorset. In the pub that night the barman said to him
"I 'spect you can tell from my accent I'm not from these parts. I comes from Sturminster Newton."
It's 8 miles away!
