Finally sorted 11d thanks to your hint Malone. Rather clumsily I'd put in the first version of 14a that I found. 11d makes a lot more sense now.

Granama1, glad that hint helped. I almost made the same mistake with 14 A!

That hint got me over the line. I've got the couplet and completed the end game. Still puzzled by a couple ie 36d blowpipe? 38a seems obvious from the clueing but seems to defeat Chambers and the anagram software. I have 'n' as the second letter which could be wrong (usual 2 letters for space?).

'hod' for blowpipe, granama1

...and try the other short space (your 'n' is wrong).

Thanks drxx, I should have got hod, it popped up in an Azed I did tecently as did the energy. Just spotted a final ? if I might be a bother but 17 down looks very much like an electronic message but the Irish Bill leaves me a bit flummoxed. Thanks. (That's definitely the last one!). Even with the ?s I enjoyed this Eclogue Billet-doux (:o)

Granama,, the Irish 'Bill' is just your last four letters of the electronic message reversed,. It'd be short for the longer Bill...
