This looks a very challenging format - and the clues are quite fearsome too! I've started this thread in case it's needed....

13 Intellectual observation when the end comes early

The definition is 'intellectual', adjective. It's not a word I've ever used!

A word for 'observation', it could also mean 'ad' or 'poster'. The last letter moves forward a bit - 'end comes early'.

Thanks Malone. I've just downloaded Chambers Thesaurus and lo! It's not a word I've ever seen either.
I'm moving forward a clue at a time but it's a slow process. This is the first I've seen where Chambers isn't the answer to so much.
Still, as long as there is progress it will keep me entertained for a while. (The Inquisitor was short but sweet this week).

Thanks Kirky. 1 sums things up for me at the moment. I see how it fits the definition and the old townie but gang member = elk????

Granama, I was puzzled by 1, till I discovered that a group of elks is called a gang.

Can someone confirm how 11 works? I really don’t have a clue what’s going on.

Unclued, the answer is a composer, someone who used staves, musical staves. The first three letters give 'block', the last three are a version of the usual two-letter 'country ditch'.
