ixion, I'm a physicist, so I'd say that they aren't really synonyms. But crosswordese is as crosswordese does :)

Parsing for 21a? I only have one answer left to insert, which is 4d, but that doesn’t seem to help me!

lumen, for 21a, 'rejecting' means reversing. Insert the answer for 4d, and take the first letters backwards in the clue.

Thanks Mattrom.
It’s a shame that the hyphened word 4-3 has to become two words to make it work!

Can anyone help with both the answer and parsing to 4d and how the answer to 9d relates to it.

I've got S?I? O?T and assume the answer is a term meaning "skid" (spin out? slip out?) but, as I can't parse it, I'm not sure how 9d fits in.

Brendan, the word from 9 D leads to the usual abbreviation, anagram that and 'points' to get your 'spin-out'.

OMG! I can't tell how long how I spent trying to find words that meant 'spin' and then removing various compass points from them - not once did I try a word in the clue!:-(

I also spent at least an hour at the start trying to shoehorn 'Basel' and (Ed) Ball in to answers and clues.

Still, got there in the end:-)

Many thanks Malone.
