I agree, malone - but it works well enough (I think) and it's another nice 'surface', so I'm ok with it.

Thanks, malone and drxx. I hadn't thought of that word for trainees! I think I'm right now, having switched my country word to 3D. I'm not a cockney I'm afraid!

...sorry, pendragon - you were one jump ahead of me, I see what you're getting at now.

Hi all I think I am nearly there but I have an answer to 6 down but cannot fully parse it - can you tell me the other solution it links too.
Also I have the answer to 22 down but can't really parse it or connect it to another clue.
Any help will be gratefully received so I can finish this off! thanks

6d links to 17d. 22d links to 21a (take them out of too nerdy).

drxx - I have a verb (very loosely) meaning judge, that is without a base. Although, as for the last three months, I am not completely sure of my interpretation of the solutions, and some of the words to be added seem interchangeable. Ah well.

I'm not really sure what you mean by 'judge...', pendragon.
I had only one apparent ambiguity - the word at 20d - which I'd mistakenly added to 1d, until realised it was required elsewhere.
