My version is to remove 'age' from the end of an 8 letter word leaving the (French) name for a wooden shoe.
The ' wooden shoe ' clue ( SABOTAGE - AGE ) isn't really cryptic, as that's where the word comes from. A saboteur was a textile worker who threw his or her wooden shoes ( sabots ) into the machinery as a protest at mechanisation. Hence sabotage
