Slugabed, thanks for your post at 18.54. It's always good to hear more about other solvers' likes, dislikes and so on.

I have fond memories of some of Araucaria's puzzles, but I'm afraid I don't think the Little Big Horn clue is a 'little gem'. This is all down to personal taste, I don't like Spooner clues, no matter how clever or funny they are! I'm sure there are many Araucaria clues that really impressed me - by being fun, by being clever, ingenious and so on.

Morning Malone

Yep, I realise that not all of his work was universally popular!

I understand what you say about Spoonerisms too.

I always felt cheered up and energised on Saturday mornings when he did one of his alphabetical offerings.

Nothing is forever!

Hi lumen, in 1a the answer leaves 2 cells empty, misprint in pig.
1d. 3 letter synonym of mother + 4 letter synonym of seeks.

I've filled in the grid apart from the top and bottom rows. I've watched relevant Youtube clips so many times I know all the lines by heart but nothing seems to suggest anything that will fit.

Thanks, ginge, I've got it now! The trouble was there were quite a few desperate attempts to avoid the middle word in the film.

Thanks Ginge, I have 1d now. Don't see why the word various is on the clue.
Still pondering on 1a

lumen - The 'rough' is a Scottish hooligan and 'preposterous' is a direction indicator

Any help appreciated on these two. There could be a misprint in the definition, and the length could wrong.

12a. E&P in the same place -- by eastern valley (6)
44a. Uncover short plant (5) ??ERS

Thanks for any help!
