Finally done, was thrown off course by stupidly getting the wrong answer for 37ac. Just one outstanding item: the letters from the down clues - I have them all except the N. I suppose it must come out of 25d, but I just can't see it. Or am I looking at the wrong clue? Thank you.

Yes, the N is extra to 25dn. If you take SANS for “without”, which includes TIRE for “flag”, you get SA(N)TIRES.

Can anyone give me a hint how the wordplay in 34 works? Cree’s hot summer, for example, with c/t, so I have the answer and see the definition but not spotting where summer goes...
