I have a full grid, I've made sense of the 11 down clues letters and found the hidden word. The 2 strings of 21 letters from the across clues, however, appear to be largely random after a promising start for both strings. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Hi planks, the first 8 pairings (including singles) are in order thereafter they may be in either order.

Finally struggled across the line, but I am still struggling with the two messages from the across clues - and how 31d parses defeats me.

All sorted except I can’t parse 22. Presume first letter is S.

Annie, I agree that the first letter is S. We need a 5-letter word for reflective, then omit H and the last letter is extra. I have a lot of loose ends to tie up but this is one that I had got.

D'oh! I've finally got it. Once I had corrected my apparent inability to count to five accurately I had all the appropriate letters and was able to make sense of them. Thanks again ginge.

Can anyone provide a hint to the wordplay 12 ac. I have an answer that must be right but is there some obscure meaning of "slip" that I'm not aware of?
