Glad you've got it, krauton. The word's in my real Chambers - I tracked it down last night.

Got there in the end with the old and new messages but, frustratingly have one clue that refuses to submit even though I have the answers! I assume that the unmutilated 17 across relates to the definition in 1d - err...why?
Also not clear on the parsing for 31a. The answer is clear but what have the grannies got to do with it?

For 17 a, my Chambers has the definition at 1d as the third meaning. As for 31 and grannies, I also have no idea granama1!

Thanks planks and sunray (and everyone else on here that adds to my Listener education). I did wonder if any of the contributors are actually compilers, having delved into the history and discovered how many compilers there actually are.
