23 Down, I think.

Thanks malone, but is not that word part of the definition?

The only way I could get the 'i' was to take 3 adjacent words (with the quarry in the middle) from the clue to 35a to give that to solve Then use the start of the first and end of last.

I don't have all my jottings, but in 23 D there are two words that aren't needed for the answer. The first one gives a 'quarry', the other one gave me two letters for the phrase.

I agree with malone, 23d gives the I.

Just realised that I never justified the last two words in 16a which I thought was one of the 8 for a while. What purpose do they serve because, for me, the clue is complete without them?

Sond9x, I hadn't thought of that - but I think the 'drug' is the fourth letter.

I too agree that 23D must give the 'I', but in that case, does the clue answer sound like some meaning of 'hotshot' and 'Afghan' mean 'ace'? I'm confused - a familiar state!

Simond9x, the last two words I think are needed for the 'H', which is voiced in the clue answer.

greengage - of the two words you quoted, one is the 'quarry' and the other is extra giving you the letter you're looking for. Hope that's not too vague!

Greengage, I had the first word as the quarry, it fits definition-wise, so the letters came from Afghani.
