Despite all the very helpful hints in this thread I am still not seeing the loop. Any hints or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated/

Alwayspuzzled, treat it as a wordsearch for a bit - if you read up and down the columns, you will notice something distinctive about two of them...

Thank you for that Malone. I have tried what you have suggested but to no avail. From Ginge's earlier hint I know that the name to be highlighted is not affected but, in my usual completely obtuse way, I can't see what needs to be done.

Alwayspuzzled, look at columns 6 and 8...and remember the earlier hint about the 'o'.

Could Malone or others please help a struggler?
I have identified a loop of 22 letters in columns 6 and 8 where there is a pattern. How are they moved round and round to create new words? I don't want to give the game away for others. If however we look at 38 across, presumably the new word will be four letters beginning with A. If I am right can anyone offer a hint as to what it it?

On a separate point I'm struggling to parse 20 across:
A soft ring fading out, like some buzzers (5).
I think I have the answer but can't like fading out with the last three letters.

Thanks to all

Hi williamseal, I think sufficient time has elapsed since publishing - the loop comprises 10 letters in both columns 6 & 8 with 2 (1 connecting either end(s) from column 7). A loop not a rectangle! Rotate 5 positions clockwise.
20a. A + pian(o)

Thanks ginge
Quite a difficult puzzle. I would not have been able to finish it without this thread, and the difference between a loop and a rectangle was critical

Williamseal, it's definitely horses for courses. I found this puzzle quite straightforward … but I had a real battle with Listener! I think you found that (Listener) easier than I did.
