Afraid I don’t get French sixes = ses. French for six = six.

Mildred, I guessed that much but I can't find any source for "ses" being the french plural for six. Can you post a link?

Thanks, timdownieuk. I will have to withdraw this; thought I remembered it from school days, but can't back it up.
On the same lines, I can't find the word " faere" which I accepted. Does someone know its meaning?
Will be away now till late evening or tomorrow.

Google "to be at sixes and sevens" viz., être dans tous ses états

Apologies I think I have got rather muddled myself. French for sixes would indeed appear to be SIX. Please ignore my parsing for 12A. back to the drawing board.

I, too, am still at a loss as to 6 down. Doesn't seem to make any sense!

Agreed! Stevie gee suggested " faere". Apart from not making sense, the word doesn't come up on Google and isn't in several dictionaries, including my French one.
Just posting in the hope of further discussion.
