I'd thought of politics and the answer to 1ac but didn't think it very cryptic, but it helped me get 1 and 2 down (why hadn't I got them before????). 5ac took a little longer for the answer to dawn. Just two to go. I have a possible answer for 6d, but can't parse it and it is a new word to me. 10ac has got me beat and it's time to go to bed.

I've got it now. I was assuming two letters for America and couldn't see the state, but three letters makes all the difference.
