If you're still wondering about 1,4 jaffra, then just look up "message in a bottle" in your search engine of choice. It was the first hit for me.

Still wondering how to explain the answer to 1d... She opened a box of letters from Dad? (7) Anyone?

I'm glad others are having parsing problems - I still don't understand 27A City couples, happily married, on the telly at last. I have an Australian city in as my answer - guess it could be wrong ...

Also 1D She opened a box of letters from Dad? it was my first in, but I don't know why it's right

Iguana, for 27a, look at the clue words 'at last'...

I can't parse 1D either but, unusually for me, got everything else without too much use of the internet - all except 26A. A have h?L?E and then presumably R. So, do I need a 3 letter word meaning 'key' with the whole being a top type? Or what? All suggestions welcome. Apart from that it's all done, so what am I going to do today?

For 1d, the letters from a 2-letter word for Dad could be described as being one letter ‘and/or’ the other.

I read it as “self-styled” because in such a thing the synonyms you might get for the thing itself are “lexicon” etc
