This piece was written a couple of months ago, so a bit out-of-date. But the timing was perfect when Ireland were playing Afghanistan, at the same time as the TIG was formed.

As the winter draws to a close, I have been following politics and overseas cricket with great interest. There has been some excellent cricket around the world, but as I am half-Irish, I have a particular interest in the Afghanistan – Ireland series currently being played in India.

It is strange how politics and cricket always seem linked. Recently Chuka Umunna made a statement, “I have left the party as it does not share my values. I am going to TIG, The Independent Group”.

By an amazing co-incidence, the Irish fast bowler with a dubious action, “Chucker” O’Mooner, walked out of the soft drinks function held after Ireland’s victory yesterday. He also made a statement.
“I have left the party as it does not share my values. I am going to TIG, Try Irish Guinness”.

I loved it jigjag, very clever idea to link the 2 "chuckers". It reminded me of a County match at Old Trafford many years ago. A famous Sri Lankan spinner was playing for Lancs, and some of the wags in the crowd kept referring to him as "Percy". I found out later that it was a reference to another famous Percy...............Thrower.

I was thinking of ending 50 years of voting Labour by switching to `The Independence Group` but `Try Irish Guinness` sounds a much more inviting proposition.

I`ve enjoyed watching Ireland, Afghanistan and Scotland play cricket in recent years and hope they all continue to do well.

England, complete with Captain Morgan, are in Dublin on Friday May 3rd so Chucker O`Mooner should be in good form at the after-match dinner - wish I was going!

Thanks Tyke

I am going to carry on voting Labour but dont expect them to win next election. I wish I was going to Dublin too (my father was from there).

The Guinness certainly tastes better over there!

In place of rained - off cricket Willis & Botham were recounting some of their `Ashes Memories` today.

Big Bad Bob mentioned a certain Lilian Thompson - is she an acquaintance of yours from the`Land of Oz`perhaps?

Thanks - no I dont know her, but I remember Lillian Board who tragically died so young.

I imagine Lilian Thompson was a terrific fast bowler of the era. I have vague memories of Lily c Willey b Dilley (in the Gully).

I am sure Hannah, Down Under, will remember her!

I think Lillian Thompson was related to Lady Mondegreen.
I'm dusting off my cricket bat...for our forthcoming election.

Don't know about the good 'Lady', but there was a definite connect to Lillian Marsh who, I believe broke a lot of English hearts

Some time ago when the earth was greener, we had another champion, Norma Thrower who overcame any number of obstacles, but never turned her hand to cricket

Mattrom ... I confess I`d never heard of `Mondegreens`... which are misheard song lyrics - in case I`m not alone!

I think a lot of our humour comes from wordplay ambiguity ... there is a pub in Oxford called `The Four Candles` after the classic Two Ronnies` sketch.

Hannah ... Rodney Marsh didn`t drop too many catches but he downed a few `tinnies` - he set the record for the number consumed on the flight from Australia to the UK!
