ChrisE, I think 'Easter Saturday' might best be regarded as technical jargon - only used by those who need to know! Ignorance, at times , is bliss.

Malone, Brendan and ChrisE

Thanks for your postings. I went to a very strict religious school and it was drummed into us that Holy Week was followed by the Easter festival, starting on Sunday and also lasting a week.

I agree that with the commercialism of today, very few people know this. At Morrisons, I was told that today was "Easter Friday". Some items, hot-cross-buns and Easter eggs mainly, had been reduced until the end of "Easter week", i.e. tomorrow!!

Thanks, jigjag. I really don't mind how people celebrate/observe/commemorate Easter - and this means that the commercialism of Easter bothers me not one jot! Easter can have deep significance for those who want or need it, but I'm glad Holy Week has never entered my consciousness, let alone my life.

Malone, I agree it does not really matter and I admit that I do know what people mean when they mention Easter Saturday. You have to be careful though. A few years ago a friend said that she would like to visit me, arriving Easter Saturday and departing Easter Sunday. I was tempted to tell her that only Dr Who can do that, or that it would be great to have her here for almost a year.

This year for local schools the "Easter term" finished on 29th March and the "Summer term" commenced on 15th April, so "Easter" fell in the summer term.

Thanks, jigjag. I think some of this stuff must be regional - I've honestly never heard anyone refer to Easter Saturday! Our schools have tried various ways to cope with the movable feast (I've absorbed some stuff!) of Easter as the variable dates play havoc with the structuring of terms, timetabling of exams etc. Many of our schools have been off for two weeks and go back on Monday. Many of us would prefer the 'Easter' holidays (for schools) to be a fixed date, maybe around the end of March - I can't be doing with equinoxes!

The Daily Telegraph weather column yesterday said that it could be the hottest "Easter Saturday" on record. The paper also published TV schedules for "Easter Saturday."

Sainsbury's were "open on Easter Saturday as usual , but closed on Easter Sunday" All were referring to yesterday. Everybody here calls it "Easter Saturday". I have not heard "Holy Saturday" since school.

Thanks, Grunger - I really meant I'd never heard 'Easter Saturday' uttered by any of my family, friends, acquaintances, people at the bus-stop, people on the train... If it's on mentioned on TV or in the papers, I probably blank it it out - I have selective deafness/blindness when it comes to cricket, football … and religious stuff.

Grunger, I meant to say that Jigjag could be shaking her head - not at you, but at the erroneous instances of 'Easter Saturday'.
