Hi, Casanova,

In 24dn, you have a dialect word for evening surrounding the first and last letters of the word moved from 22dn. Definition is “upset”.

In 28ac, the word you want for “brilliant” is a three-letter slang word, which could also be the abbreviation for a word in the previous sentence.

Thank you Wintonian. I had roughly understood 24d, except I didn’t really understand why on vacation was operative on the word moved from 22d. I suppose it suggests that there is nobody (no letters) within.78

Casanova, "on vacation" is becoming a fairly common way of denoting the outside letters of a word. I can't remember when I first came across it, but I've encountered it many times since that first encounter.

Does anyone know if you can access the inquisitor crossword these days. It used to be in The Independent magazine every Saturday, before the cessation of publication. I have subscribed to The Independent, on line, but I am unable to find it. There is evidence that it’s still produced on this website

Have completed the grid but cannot parse 25,26, 27 and 28 across to identify the words that move, and hence complete the hint. Not essential I know but any help would be appreciated.

The puzzle reminds me of the time I worked in a posh City bank where the lift was always breaking down. I spoke to the engineer and he said ‘the trouble is that it goes up and down all day’

Thanks for any help

25/26 'in' swaps with 'not'
27/28 'Cut' swaps with 'learner'.
