Thank you cloverjo and Malone, Finding this tricky...haven't found any strings yet though i have a good bit of the grid filled in ... nor can i see two pairs of answers which need jumbling....

Kirky, I ignored the string stuff for as long as possible. I had two definite answers that wouldn't fit with crossing letters, so that gave me a big help towards one pair.

37 Is thematic. I didn't solve the clue!
15 Veneered, superficially disguised. Veered with N(am)E (on vacation) inside.

37 - 'operate' = USE inside MUM ('silence') + S

26 - before = A(nte) + PaRoLe Is [regularly (+anagram)].

I have an almost full grid and know what two colours are needed for the highlighting. All I am missing are the two letters which go in the central square but I cannot see anything which will give the location of the thematic event. Any hints would be appreciated..
