Orson, for 27 A, you need an abbreviation for two words near the beginning of the clue....

Malone the defn for 12d isn't visitor ...defn is at the other end ...otherwise your endgame wont work

Thanks, Kirky - I was looking at my first copy - that one had two or three errors in it (especially involving 12 D!).

Not at all, malone. For the last bit, I was held up because I looked at the second "theme" rather than the earlier one.

Mess= medley, according to Chambers. I didn't go any further - sorry!

Jogamel - composes = sets. The T is an extra letter.

mes = master (old word) + sets (composes) with T extra
