Grunger.

'Unknown'? That's dumbfounded me, sorry!
Yes, it was good to see the pork pie...

I haven't heard of her either, nor had many of the posters on Times site

Jigjag, Grunger

I think I was dumbfounded partly because we'd just had the author's very famous character as one of the thematic elements in a very recent Inquisitor. I maybe assumed you'd seen and done that, and I maybe assumed the author was more widely known generally. Sorry!

I, too, would have considered her well-known. But possibly a bit of a 'one hit wonder'? (Okay, maybe two.) Yet her last novel was published as recent;y as 2004. Which is about five minutes ago to me.

Nelson, thanks.

Grunger, Jigjag, anyone... I should have said that I feel 'author' on its own is a little unsatisfactory - not quite as bad (in my eyes) as 'novel', but not far off it!

Thanks, have looked her up. Jean Brodie rings a bell but it was written 60 years ago - well before my time.

I saw the film but about 50 years ago. I had no idea who wrote book.

Thanks, Grunger and Jigjag.

I suppose this is just a sign that we all know - or remember - different things. I have never read any Jane Austen books, any of the Bronte books, any Muriel Sparks books, any H Rider Haggard books... but must have absorbed enough information over the years to know about them!
