Good point, Nelson! My main doubt about the wearing of the green (!) is that it doesn't seem to indicate the deficiency in almost all of the unclued entries.

Hi all, I went for green in the end as I reasoned, probably incorrectly, that the unclued entries were all examples of Irish Free States, if we take Ireland=I, for which the named individual fought.

I have two clues remaining.

25a. Leave some sons to scoff? On the contrary (5)

34. Scullion from Perth putting back stale food provision (5)

Thanks for help.

Hi sunray,
25. the usual abbreviation for son(s) in a 2 word expression for some.
34. I can't think of a hint; droob from boord (obsolete (stale) form of board).

My problem with the red 'i' of the newspaper is that it is lowercase and this 'I' is a capital (because the coloured cells number 7 not 8).

malone - I think the 'appropriate' you are missing is covered by 'cryptically representing' and it's used twice in the preamble. The problem is, it can mean just about anything! I could make a case for the 'deficiency' being the country in question, and it could break down into - 'I' + (2 letter abbrev for 'with reference to') + (4 letter synonym for 'country' or 'state') which is what's missing from the 9 shaded entries. But it's just too contrived to be right.

This seems to be another GWIT puzzle - I really don't like them, and I think whoever came up with that acronym liked them even less.

I'm still hoping a definitive answer will come along... eventually.

Thanks, drxx. I'd originally planned to colour my name any old colour as I was basically just showing the I - but once you start thinking 'why does it say "colour' and not just "highlight"?' you can lead yourself down lots of paths! I too like a definitive answer, but there doesn't seem to be a straight forward one here.

Here’s my two p for what it’s worth.

I think any colour will do.

The ‘cryptic depiction’ is merely the letter itself which appears when the name is highlighted.

The letter which is missing from the unclued answers, including the ambiguous one, is I believe the thing that is won.

I also think the preamble would have said coloured appropriately if something specific was required.

You are so right about lots of paths malone - I've now discovered that parnell's symbol is the ivy leaf (although symbolically isn't the same as 'cryptically' of course). And then there's a blood disorder called 'factor I deficiency' that results in excess bleeding (maybe it's red after all?)

djawhufc - Personally, I think 'cryptically' must mean something - it's not a word crossword setters use lightly. I'm sure you're right about the abbreviation being the obvious one , but there's nothing cryptic about that.
