The name has to be coloured, thus revealing the deficiency and representing cryptically what was to be won in due course.
I've got the name, and I know the deficency. BUT, what colour do I use - red (Independent) or green (ireland) ? I'm really not sure!
Could anyone enlighten me and tell me why the colour is the right colour.
Thanks

No one seems to be giving a definite answer ...some say red some say green...

mjk - I opted for green because of the words 'cryptically representing' in the preamble, and I can't think of another way of cryptically representing that single capital letter other than EMERALD I... However, this uses the abbreviation in two ways - ''I... for the EMERALD I...'' and that could be a problem... or not.

The last time I tried to decipher a preamble like this I failed miserably, so perhaps you should wait for a better answer (it eventually arrived the last time).

Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.

As I've said earlier I do not submit so it hardly matters to me but having had a scout about online I found the above and another site on the "meaning" of colours which also gives purple if this is of any help.

I'm leaning towards red... The seven-letter name resolves an ambiguity, in an unclued entry, but nothing more. All the unclued entries are lacking something - we've to colour the name, thus revealing the deficiency, but a green name doesn't really indicate what's missing in 1 Down, for example. Still, I don't really get why red highlighting would represent what was to 'be won in due course' … unless it's just my winning entry!

Best of luck with your entry malone but as there doesn't appear to be a definitive answer I'm pretty sure most single colours previously mentioned or my first thought which coincided with nelson's will be accepted.

Thanks, ginge. My first thought had been that it didn't matter what colour we used - there's usually 'appropriately' added to the instructions if it's a necessity. I started thinking more only when I saw the discussions!

My idea was that if it was red it would represent the newspaper the crossword is in?! So you won the 'i' crossword?
A bit convoluted I know!

Mjk, that's what I meant about 'my winning entry'! Yes, it's convoluted - but so is the last sentence of the preamble.

Just to add to the fun - independence is often 'won' with blood.
