Hi, unclued,

For 1ac, the extra word is alto, and the definition is solo players, where solo refers to a card game, also known by a five-letter French name. This word, with an acute accent on its last letter, refers to a fabric with blended tones. The final letter of the answer is the standard abbreviation for soprano.

Happy New Year to all regulars on the Listener forum.

My second Down rectification is an adverb whose definition should (on my reckoning) start with P, but my spare P word isn't an adverb. Where have I erred?

I also have an issue with Issue in 32A. Is it a definition of the grid entry ?

moffat - you need an extra word starting with W.
'Issue' in this sense means 'to send out' (suggesting a homophone).

...sorry, having checked the clue it's 'Issue' for the def and 'to listener' for the homophone indicator.

Hello all. Happy New Year to you. I've filled the grid and got the theme but as I cannot make a word out of the leftover letters I must have gone wrong somewhere. I have seven definitions from the down clue extras, all of which map well to the thematic changes. So I'm left with 13 first letters plus the two circled, but they refuse to be anagrammised! Have I made an 'obvious' mistake? BTW I still haven't got 11a; the unch is missing. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hi piffleworthy, it sounds as if you're almost there. Perhaps it's worth checking you've transcribed the initial letters of the 13 additional words correctly. The 15 letter word can be considered as having a 5 letter prefix. Re 11a, there's a strong hint at post #2.

PS it should be clear the OP meant four months.
