Enjoyed this puzzle hugely, but one answer is still causing me grief.

1d - agonist or amongst?
Can't parse, apart from (a)gone, and think 9 ac could be gadi or magi.

Can anyone relieve me of my torment please?

Jazzlover, I think Mong is a dialect word for a crowd or something like that - I haven't got the clue to check the details.

Thanks all. I am complete. At 6d I’d misspelled the scientist’s name.
Just one thing nagging, the reference to “I’ve got you in the book....third attempt”?

Glad you're now complete, Lumen. I can't help with the 'third attempt' bit - I ignored some of the preamble stuff!

Hey Malone I didn’t see Spectator this Christmas, first time in years, a bit too busy and didn’t want to spend £6 on magazine I don’t actually like, apart from the puzzle! Did I miss anything special, not much on the threads here.
I did Guardian and Azed Christmas specials, enjoyed both of those...

Look at the books the author wrote. The third one is bound to include this scientist.

Lumen, I enjoyed this year's Spectator puzzle . It was less Christmassy than usual! There's a poster here, dja…, who emails copies of the puzzle to many of us. You should ask to be put on his list.

Thanks jazzlover, yes I spotted the third book sounds science related, so you are probably right.
