I also had difficulty finding the 'phrase' - if you have all of the extra letters you can put them in order at the end of your square. Your coded pairs in the grid will then help you get the key letters at the end of the phrase (try to get the 'verge' answer, it helps).

sorry, that should be 34ac (35ac is not coded).

25ac is a very common word but the definition ('verge') is obscure.

If (as I did) you decide to work out the phrase from the anagram rather than fiddling about with the encoded pairs, then the fact that the scant supply of vowels must be divided between three words is very helpful.

I spotted that too jacknatter but, strictly speaking, what I consider to be a 'phrase' wasn't what I ended up with!

Fair point. In its original context the group of three words would not normally be thought of as a phrase but simply (as Azed says) 'three consecutive words' from a line of verse. Only in the context of the Playfair grid is it a (code) phrase.
