I took V and B to contain ‘down’ indicators, but now I see from the above that P does too. They can’t all be downs though, surely?

The chicken V, I meant.

although B uses the same term as chicken V, it must be an across

I don’t understand why! I have them both as downs (with indications in the clues), and everything fits. The only inconsistent indication I can see is P, which also suggests down.
I must be missing something.

the D is most definitely a down answer which means that guestimate and thumbscrew must be bottom left not top right ?

Yes, scarlett, but you have (inadvertently?) given a couple of answers there!

I can’t see a way to enter all the answers which have possible direction indicators in the clues as apparently indicated. I’ve gone with B and the first V having the most obvious indicators but that means ignoring what I agree look very like indicators of the same direction in D and P.

I think the "over" in the B could indicate a horizontal reversal as well as a vertical one. I think the D and the P are definitely downs.

Dammit, I forgot about the D and carelessly entered it as an across having decided that B and chicken V had down indications.
You’re right, chrise, but I’m not happy about it!

Re B: 'over' is not an orientation hint. The first four letters of the solution are a sort of synonym for 'over'.
