Hi Wintonian, though anglo-Irish influence is still felt in much of Leinster, after all we are only 3 or 4 generations on from 1922, I think that Dublin was a poor choice, it is the kind of thing that nowadays might be interpreted as provocative. A Northern town would have suited the clue much better. But this kind of thing has been going on for years...

When I saw that this was a "Chalicea" offering I was expecting an entertaining but gentle Saturday afternoon watching footy whilst solving. How wrong can you be! Easily the toughest that Shirley has treated us to, and a brilliant challenge. Just crawled over the line.

I have to admit I have filled the grid without identifying all the 19 extra words (and I know what the quotation is without finding all the letters).

But as I understand it I now have to replace all the "offenders" with a 19-letter word. Maybe I'm not looking carefully enough but I cannot see a single word that long in the clues, extra or otherwise.

Are all the grid entries proper words at the end?

Orson - Not looking for 19 letter word - look at the 'offender' answers you have against the extra words you have located...all should then be clear

I see now, crates, thank you. But I must say it certainly reads as though a single, 19-letter word must be used. So it's 19 word entries and not 19 cell entries!

Yes - guess it can be read two ways - but now should make locating remaining extra words straightforward...

Hello TonyNannini and other kind people

Greetings from the bottom of the class. If you have solved the quotation could you give this struggling individual a nudge. Does it begin with an 8 letter word starting whor? Could you hep me with other words. I have completed the grid but am not going to complete and enter but I would like to take it a stage further.

Thanks to all

williamseal, you are correct about the 8-letter word - a word not normally used in polite society. You say you've completed the grid so I assume you know who the "offender" is. Spell it out as a 3-letter word (English version not American) and look it up in a dictionary of quotations and you will get it all. Failing that, look up the 8-letter word likewise.

Thanks Orson

I now have the quotation and will look at the substitutions. I see that it is an excellent puzzle but a stretch too far for me.

This Forum is a great help.
