bunty, how long is the poet's name.

Thanks Meursalt. Wakeling's not my surname but a reference to where I live - close to Watling Street which is derived from the waeclingas, the local tribe in roman times, so I updated the spelling.

He's VERY famous more so for his plays ...! 11 letters

I did not consider him just for that reason. Plays.

Still missing some in across.

i googled the 2 words i had from the last of the acrosses and beg of the downs to identify the play with the poem in it...

I got the poem.
I don't know how 6d, 8d, 31d and 16d parse.

Now trying to find where to change the five cells.

8d ...anagram of 33a T is extra
16d i think loto can also be bingo as well as the usual lotto

I think extra letter in 16d is I? Per poem.
Loto makes o the extra letter.

I found three versions of the poem.
Last word is 2-4 in one and fits the extra letters we get in 16d and 18d.
The next word is also 2-4 and 5 letters have to be changed to make this 6 letter word.
