Is 16 ALTO? If so I can’t justify register as the definition unless I’m missing something.

Welcome regardless, Wakeling...

Sunray, 6 substitutes A of Sag with now; 8 is anagram of 33 without T; 31 surrounds a castle, worker is man.
You're right, there are different versions of the verse online. Very misleading. My ODQ has 1st line : 4,7,5,3,7,3; 2nd line 2-3 (though in the case of this puzzle it is 2-4); 3rd line begins 2-4, 2-4...

Hi, unclued,

Yes, 16dn is ALTO. In music, a register refers to a particular range of notes for a singer, so music in the alto register is suitable for altos to sing.

Thanks Meursault. I am not a musical expert and couldn’t understand the reference in Chambers.
I must admit I did groan when I saw in the preamble “....the answer with an extra letter not entered in the grid”. I had hoped that setters could retire this overplayed method of leaving a message!

Thank meursalt.
At this point my grid is filled.
Haven't found the five cells to change.
Or any of the protagonists.

Not to worry, Sunray - I've been called worse...

Comment 6 gives a hint to finding the 5 cell changes. The protagonists are all varieties of the creature named in the last word of line 1 of the verse. To get started I recommend just googling --- species.

A quite delightful puzzle, much easier than of late. I would have finished in record time (for me) if it hadn’t been for getting 35a wrong, with a slightly homophobic answer.
Well done Hedge-sparrow.
