Since this is Paul - my granddaughter’s favourite work from this genre is The Puddle on the Bathroom Floor by I P Squint. Hilarious apparently.

Ah ok, thanks for that. Think I'll give this month a miss then.

They are not quite like that but it’s what they made me think of. Nonsense titles, nonsense authors.

16D is a three letter inf. word for leg in a rising six letter mythical monster. Hopefully that will get you going again simond9x.

Thanks ixion, I appreciate the nudge but, having spent a few hours on this already and, having been given a hint at the theme, I think I'll get on with some household jobs that require my attention ;-)

The last year I've been getting into The Listener crossword....... that IS a challenge! Recommended to anyone who's never tried it (but don't give up with early failures).

I think you have to subscribe to The Times generally now to access the Xwords though?

Ixion, 19 across (which is not further defined) is by 24 (which can be made into a person) so the instructions are correct.
I can make a title for 2, 11dn (involving vacuuming) but I can't parse it.
Nor Can I parse what seems to be the only solution for 5 across.

Only "is" was supposed to be in bold!

Thanks for that barretter...that does make much more sense : )

2,11....the hot place is where you bake, old=o, gang=ring

5A...treat first 4 letters of the answer as a sporting surname ; )

I think the "tripper" must refer to Melville (first half) ? Then prayer will be the definition. I too have the title for 2 - "old" being the second letter, followed by word for gang inside a warm place all surrounded by paid attention ... but I can't see why the author (goddess of plants followed by word for nation or aver?) should have written that book. Anyone got the joke? - oh, yes! -- it needs " 's in " in the middle ....
