I've gone with a 4 letter authoress around a three letter (reduced to two) novel (kipling)

Haven't successfully parsed 18D yet mind you...

For 18d . Six sounds like sicks ( ills )

Are the instructions correct? They say "8, 19 across by 24," yet the grid itself says 8 is linked to 22, and 19 seems stand-alone. Or have I misread the preamble?

clue in the downs numbered 22,8 should be 21,8 ??

Think the 19A in the preamble is just an error pendragon....

6,26 by 9.17.20, are the invented works/authors.

Thanks, ixion. I couldn't even parse the instructions properly. And so they're fictional fictions? No wonder I couldn't source them.

Paul is my favourite setter but can’t get on his wavelength at all with this one. Solved ten clues but can’t break into the theme. Spent ages on it so about to give up unless a nudge kickstarts me. Have 24 so maybe a nudge for 16? I assume it’s an anagram. Or 2d might open up NW? Thanks
