I thought this was OK. For once I saw the grid stare quite quickly.

Couple of loose ends for me. Don’t understand the wordplay in 9, and 1d seems to require us to put an s on the end of an adjective, unless I’ve missed something. Anyone shed any light?

Smellyharry - a word that can rarely mean severe though more usually keen minus an A for Australian. Definition is flood and sailor is the extra word.
I am with you on 1d.

Thank you, smithsax and crates. 9 makes sense now, relieved to have it correct.

Hadn’t spotted the also noun.

The first word of Z is the same word as the definition of the unclued answers. The second is its shape.

An earlier post pointed me to look at the Wiki page for a very common gambling card game. I know nothing about it but the definition seems to be one of the terms used for when a player declines to bet.
