As so often happens, I've now got it.

Good! I couldn't come up with much in the way of a hint - the things I tried were virtually giving you the answer, so I mentioned only the 'sounds like'!

Uncle_w, glad you finished it yourself. I think the sheer fact of posting here gives our brains one final nudge and the answer comes to us!

Nearly finished, although I'm stuck in the SE and I have no idea yet what the undefined words or the extra letter might be about.

Help please with;

the unclued down giving what to do as regards missing/added letters could be split 1,5 though it is a 6 letter word too....
