Hi,
I have completed grid and extra word. Can't equate musket/dollars? Have I gone wrong somewhere?

Hi Woodlouse, once I found the answer I did remember that I'd once known it...if that makes any sense. I thought that there was a slight weakness in the endgame, in that whatever letters the solver already had for 1A, 1D & 4D, and the equivalent opposite entries, these were very useful for finding the replacement words for thematic clues 5, 6, & 7 and 2, 3, & 4 respectively. There was no such assistance for thematic clue 1.

Oh yes. I see it. I agree that it is strictly a redundant word, used by the setter as a deception, since the clue would work okay without it. Just the other week we were talking about the use of redundant words by setters. Happens all the time.

The extra words I have are arm, search, solitary, pathogen, Nick and woman.

Hi Unclued, indeed. But also equals 100. I suppose the critical distinction between this clue and the 6 with the extra words is that while this clue might read perfectly well without dollars, it does also read well with dollars. The clues with the extra words do not read well until the extra word is removed.

I've been away motor-homing in deepest Dorset sans t'internet. I had a complete grid and most of the extra words but was struggling to make the connection between them. Thanks to the helpful posts - now all done.
