I must have missed something as I couldn't see any ambiguity. There were plenty of entries that fitted but I could find only one that was thematic. In fact the only thematic word I needed to resolve an ambiguity was the title.

A hawk is someone keen on a fight

It comes after 2 words that are both synonyms for fight beginning s and r respectively.

There is an alternative spelling for the last across entry, excluded by one of the superfluous words. (However I haven't yet seen how the title works)

I completed this quite quickly yesterday morning and have a full grid with the correct seventh word. However I am left with a couple of unresolved issues.
I have not solved the 4th thematic clue which I assumes goes with 1a. I have the commoner association which is a 10 letter word sxxxxxxxxh and the only alternative I can find with 8 is txxxxxxe which I cannot parse from the clue.
Also I cannot find the extra word to go with 4d.
