Many thanks to both Malone and Jazzgirl. I've now finished.

I now understand 3d and have got 21d. Yes, I'm kicking myself, but I just hadn't thought of sub as a verb. Doh!!!

Thanks Rossim

I hadn't spotted it. That makes the theme more realistic. I wondered why Engels hadn't appeared?

I noticed before I'd finished and the few extra letters were a great help.
I didn't enjoy this puzzle very much though.

I hadn't noticed the famous phrase in the circumference and I'm so glad you pointed it out. I think it's great!
When I looked up whose 200th birthday it was I was very amused to see the celebratory traffic light that has been installed in the town of his birth. Check it out.

rossim, If I had noticed the phrase earlier, it would certainly have saved me staring at 22a for so long !

ethereal, have just watched the video with a chuckle.
