Thank you Randk and Cockie. As far as the selection of the correct letters is concerned I am toying with the idea that no letters are repeated in each of the rows and columns containing any of the choices but I could be completely wrong.
Stuck in the top of the grid ...these 2 would help please:

11a Holding celebration, depend on backing singer (6) ???LER possibly rely reversed for the last 4 letters?
Bunty, 8 across is an anagram of real + h for hard and s = first letter, i.e. facing of stone. 11 across is rely round a two letter word for party all reversed.
My pleasure Bunty. You have certainly helped me enough in the past. I have just done what I hope are the eliminations and I have finished up with every row and column having 12 different letters in each. I nearly misled myself because I originally had G rather than K as one of the alternatives for 4 down.
