I have just started solving this.
I think a letter has to be added to some clues and it has to be removed from some answers.

16a is one where you have to add the letter to solve the clue.

20A is 8,6 but a letter is dropped before entering.

I have not yet solved the two you mention.

I think 29a might be strims but can't see where ace (or ?ace)fits in

17 could be rank?ed giving bitter? 90 is N.
Bittern has loud deep call.

23d seems to be wa?y in se.

There are 3 types of clue in this puzzle.

Normal

Ones where a letter (sometimes more than once)has to be added to the clue.

Ones where a letter is removed from
Grid entry - definition is correct but wordplay gives you the mangled form.

Like xwordfan I found some of the parsing too contrived and obscure for this to be an enjoyable puzzle.
