Yes, it does matter. Look at the two letters to be replaced, think of the numbered position of one in the alphabet amd count on from the second letter by the same number.

20/16 is another. And you're right, there is a choice at 12.

Almost finished, got seven of the nine, plus the centre letter. Just a couple of pesky ones holding out in the SW quadrant. Hints (not answers please) for 25 and 19 would help me put this one to bed. Thanks

Re 19D, the centre of Birmingham is three letters, not 'IN'! That night help. I am amazed you got the centre letter without the all nine letters. I have all nine, and I have no idea what the central letter is.

I have completed all the grid and resolved the 9 clashes according to the formula, but can't see the common link - despite peterm's hint earlier ...

I actually guessed the centre letter after the first four, the rest confirming my suspicions. On my grid, I've ringed the 9 ( well, 7 in my case) and the centre one. It helps me think about where the other 2 may occur.
