I didn't know the band either, but found a synonym for best from the crossers and googled them. If I am right, however, then what is 'way back' doing in the word play?

if you are googling then you may google the whole phrase and get another band.

Thanks, I'll give it a go!
However I think I need to retire defeated on this puzzle as there are a number ( like 18A or 1D) where I have a plausible definition but unable to parse. Hey Ho, time to move on!

We got 12d ages ago. No need for spoilers. It's the theme that is troublesome. Incredible.

It is a pretty obscure theme I agree. I found it easier to just complete the grid then afterwards find all the references some of which I have no doubt missed. Kind of makes you wonder what is the point, maybe some sort of anniversary.

It's one of my 60s favourites! However knowing theme isn't really helping solve clues!
