I've solved those and 17a.
I can see how the construction of the grid works. I still don't get the reference to 'doubles' though.
Am I overthinking it?

You will have seen that it's a 17a. It's two short of being a 17a twice!

If it's two short that must just be chance. There are 26 letters around the 22a.
