Thanks mattrom, got it now. My 24a also ended in b and fitted the theme and i hadn't seen there was another possibility.

first time poster though try the Genius regularly; eventually get there. one clue to go. have the letters for 22a C-Y-A-. only one word seems to fit for 'griddable' answer, but foxed by the 8-letter word. any subtle aid appreciated. happy new year

yes it's cayman for the grid
8 letterword ...handyman changes to Candyman then ND is left out for the grid

thanks for confirmation Kirky. obviously H had to change to C, but bluejacket?? always associated with a tar or the fuzz. go figure. thanks again
