I have this, but how does it parse? I don't see the context for "scrub over".

scrub synonym for get rid of....

over ..... means the synonym for scrub has A inside

Thanks to all of you on the forum who have helped me get some answers. Like a couple of others I've been stuck on this crossword and I can usually do Paul. I still haven't got 25a. I've now got the second half thanks to Barretter, but the first half eludes me. I think I have an answer for 24a, which is a 25. I have an animal. Am I in the right ballpark?

An animal is correct, but it is only one type of 25a, and not a mammal

Yes, 24A is an animal, but 25s are not animals (in the sense of mammals). If you have 17A look it up in a dictionary or Wikipedia and you will find out what 25s are, and what the first three letters of 25A are.

should say that a mammal is correct for the answer, but not for the other 25s

I tried to look it up in my dictionary earlier, but it wasn't there. My dictionary is old and I'm hoping for a more up-to-date one for Christmas. But then I checked Wikipedia and have got it. I'm still not sure why it is do what what you do endlessly. But many thanks for the help.

It's what 25s do to make the things that catch their prey, without its last letter.

What makes it poor is at least three of the examples (I'm not sure about the others) don't do it!

You will probably find 17A inside the entry for the first three letters of its name rather than as an entry by itself. That's where it is my Chambers.
