I took it as OR for gold as Ghana used be called Gold Coast then LAND and O for old...

I'm assuming 26D is valerie - don't fully understand why - vale can be leaving/farewell or valley/ria and 21st themed answer could have been valeria but still doesn't account for the "e" or "rie" depending on how you look at it - anyone able to enlighten me?
