Oh great - ambiguity. Hadn't spotted the 'U' one. So now I have 7 examples not 6, all around the empty space ..... Another f-up!

The one you refer to is different from the other six, and can be ignored.

Can someone explain 2, 3d and 38 please. I have 6 clashes from which I cannot find anything near resembling a name. Is 6 correct?

2d: This is clear once you find the obscure definition of Trial in Chambers

3d: STAVE is a musical staff which has bars, of course

3: This is an &lit clue, 'Essentially' clues the middle letters of each word

I do not understand the wordplay to 27acr.

I have at least 5 clashes (from which I can't see any sensible name) ,and I'm still struggling for 12Ac and 42Ac.

12 needs American abbreviation for site of Nixon war. 42 think of cooking range. Def only 4 letters in name.

12 also needs a for ante

27 a has a Chinese potter by a well known word for meadow

All complete but I cannot understand the construction of 27across as regards Potter? I have a three letter word for local meadow plus six more of which five are checked by down answers.
